Operating an AC with solar for camping

Solar for camping means more comfort without electrical connection or more comfort e.g. with a air conditioner when the power supply on the campsite is weak.
Purchasing solar for camping is always worth it and a good investment. Older campsites, especially in southern countries or rural areas, only offer 3 or 4 amps per pitch.
This means, that you can only use electrical devices with up to 3A x 230V = 690 W oder 4A x 230V = 920 W via the campsite's power connection.
Having a solar for camping on top of your RV provides you with additional power supply.
With a solar panel with 200 W/12V, the battery is charged up to 15 amps at its peak, with 300 W/12V it is around 25 amps under good conditions.
With correspondingly large batteries, the entire RV can even be cooled down with an air conditioning system.
An economical Truma Aventa roof air conditioner consumes approx. 700 W in continuous operation: 12 V = 60 amps per hour.
With two lithium batteries of 100 ampere each, the air conditioner can be operated for up to 3 hours from the batteries of the RV.
Whereby it is usually a great pleasure to cool the RV, campervan or travel trailer down for an hour so that you can fall asleep better.

230V/12V RV solar panels, campervan solar panels, travel trailer solar panels with inverters

The larger the solar battery (100 - 200 Ah/St) as power storage and the higher the charging power of the RV solar panels, the more powerful the solar system can be. Of course, larger and more powerful RV solar panels, campervan solar panels, travel trailer solar panels recharge consumption more quickly.
The more powerful the inverter, the stronger your 230V device can be.
The power of an inverter in RV, travel trailer or campervan is usually between 500 and 1500 watts.
Sine wave inverters provide "smooth and clean" power, even for sensitive devices. For electric shavors, electric toothbrushes and charging laptops, a regular inverter is sufficient.

Campervan solar panels for campervan roofs or car roofs

The available space on your campervan's roof or car roof is usually the limit of the size of your campervan solar panel. There are two common versions of the campervan solar panels.

• The classic 12V campervan solar panel with aluminum frames, which is often installed on roof rack brackets on VW vans, panel vans, off-road vehicles and campervans. These campervan solar panels have advantage that the solar radiation on the roof of your VW van, campervan or SUV is reduced. The shadow of these campervan solar panels creates the effect of a tropical roof like the LandRover.  Usually three campervan solar panels fit side by side on the roof rack (structure width 410 mm, 545 mm). The power of a solar panel on top of the campervan is therefore usually between 100 and 300 watts.

• The flexible campervan solar panel is glued flat on the campervan's roof.  This has the advantage that the height of your campervan is hardly increased despite the flexible campervan solar panels (approx. 5-8 mm) being installed. According to our several months of tests, an 80-100 watt solar panel is usually sufficient to operate a narrow camping cooler. We tested this with the Reimo built-in compressor cooler box (26 liters) in the VW T5 / T6 Cityvan (Item No. 71177).
  The reason for the small dimensioning of the solar cell is the short duty cycle (30%) of modern compressor coolers.

Travel trailer solar panels - always electrictiy at the sunny spot

The travel trailers solar panels are determined by the right installation area on the travel trailer's roof which is usually quite full. There is e.g. the skylights, Hekis, stack for the heater, SAT antenna.
For particular small or narrow installation areas, Reimo offers travel trailer solar panels by Carbest from a width of 410mm.

MPPT charge controller, ideal for every solar battery

MPPT charge controllers are perfect for the requirements that a 12V solar controller in the RV, campervan or travel trailer must meet today.
Many different types of batteries such as AGM, gel or Lithium battries require different charging currents. The MPPT charge controller recognizes the corresponding battery and maximizes the charging current for the battery used. MPPT charge controllers enable charging even with partial shading and if cells with voltages greater than 20V are used. This is particularly useful when charging LiFEPO4 batteries, this type of battery can be fully charged with an MPPT solar controller 12V in an extremely short time.
Charging with conventional charge controllers takes a lot longer with the same irradiance.

Solar batteries

Solar batteries are available in different versions. The lithium or LIFEPO4 batteries mentioned above are characterized by high charging currents. A 90% total discharge is easily possible for a short time. The built-in battery management ensures reliable power supply and discharge. The LiFePO4 batteries charge (depending on the charging current) 3 to 10 times faster than the conventional gel or AGM solar batteries!

Example: With sufficient power supply, a LiFePO4 can be fully charged within one hour.

The AGM solar batteries have been in use with us for many years and have proven their worth. They are robust and after 950 cycles (with a depth of discharge of 30%) they still have 80% of the nominal capacity.
Thanks to the mats built into the AGM battery, this 12V battery can be installed horizontally, just like the LiFePO4. Gel solar batteries and acid batteries such as Moll batteries are also suitable as solar batteries.
They are a little cheaper than the previous variants. Incidentally, acid batteries may only be installed in the interior of a vehicle in a closed, ventilated room.
