The solar charge controller controls the electricity that is passed from the 12v solar panel in the battery. What do I need a solar regulator for?
Solar regulators 12V control the solar systems for motorhomes, caravans, caravans, camping buses, summer houses and boats. This means that the 12V charge controller controls the flow of current to the solar battery. This control of the solar regulator normally prevents overcharging or deep discharging of the solar battery. Good solar controllers can be adjusted to the type of battery to be charged. The MPPT charge controller, charging at the limit with the MPPT solar controller
MPPT charge controllers optimise the charging currents. The current generated by the solar modules is subject to constant change. Various factors are responsible for this, here are a few examples.
- the temperature of the solar module (optimal at approx. 21 degrees)
- the time of day
- the incidence of shade, e.g. partial shade under a tree
- the module type
An integrated controller in the MPPT charge controller monitors these changing conditions and controls the charging so that the greatest possible charging success is always achieved. MPPT charge controllers thus ensure an average of 20% more electricity yield. This is achieved by the solar controller constantly searching for the optimum voltage point with the highest solar output of the connected panel. With such a high degree of efficiency, an MPPT charge controller can continuously produce electricity (albeit on a smaller scale) even under difficult conditions such as clouds, cold or heat. An MPPT charge controller "maintains" your solar battery. Whether acid, gel, AGM or lithium 12V battery, an MPPT charge controller supplies the different battery types with optimal power and maintains the performance of your solar battery for a long time through this intelligent battery care.
PWM charge controller with shunt technology
PWM charge controllers prevent overcharging of your solar battery by "short-circuiting" the panel. The 12V solar controllers with PWM (pulse width modulation) generate analogue signals via a digital signal source. With the PWM solar controller, only two components are taken into account, the duty cycle and the frequency. This results in a voltage level with only 2 different settings. Simply put, the PWM solar regulator is a switch. When the switch of the solar regulator is on, the solar panel is used to charge the solar battery. When the constant voltage of the solar battery is reached, the PWM solar regulator is switched off by the short circuit mentioned. The state of charge of the solar battery is maintained by constantly switching the solar regulator on and off. PWM solar controllers are perfectly okay for installation with long, constant charging times, such as when installing the solar system on the roof of your garden shed. The MPPT solar controller is the better choice for changing conditions and approx. 20% more current speaks for itself.
